![Born in Groot-Zundert, the Netherlands on March 30, 1853, to a Dutch protestant pastor and his wife, Vincent Willem van Gogh committed suicide on July 27th , 1890 in Auvers-sur-Oise, France.
As a child he was deemed to be moody, often seeking only his own company. Upon leaving school, and up to age 27 he was employed as an art dealer, a French teacher, became a theological student, then an evangelist., never able to create for himself any sense of permanence, always fascinated, always part of the emotional hue of ordinairiness. Such did he seek to express through his paintings as a member of the expressionist school, whose members attempted to capture their emotions on canvass.
Vincent resided in various parts of Belgium and the Netherlands, and being an admirer of Jean Francois Millet and Honore Daumier, Vincent’s early works depicted mainly peasants, whom he immortalized in all their earthliness with sombre boldness. An excellent example being The Potato Eaters.
During February of 1886 he moved to Paris, to stay with his brother Theo. Tempory employment was found at Fernad Cormon’s atelier, and it was here that our Vincent met Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Emile Bernard, Edgar Degas, Paul Gauguin, Camille Pissarro, and Paul Signac. Vincent’s countenance experienced an upward curve, for he now entered a period of flowers, portraits, and more brightness in his art. During he also came to admire the art of Japanese printmakers such as Hiroshige and Hokusai, and experimented in this regard.
In 1888 he moved to the South of France, Provence, where he proliferated in isolation with scenes of peasants, trees, fields and the rusticness of everyday life. Here in Arles he first used his well-known swirling brush strokes, intense yellows, greens and blues, as depicted in his Starry Night(1889).
He now wrote his friend Gaguin, who joined him for but a few months, as the two constantly were at odds. One day he threatened Paul (Gaguin) with bodily harm, and that night,deep in remorse then cut of part of his own ear. [[ Latter day speculation would have it that Van Gogh possibly suffered from an acute, very painful ear infection, and cut of his ear because he no longer could withstand the pain]]. He was hospitalized in Arles, and shortly afterwards spent a year in the nearby asylumof Saint-Remy, where he continued to paint under the guidance of his good friend, doctor Gachet....
